Have you ever felt curious about Reiki but weren’t quite sure what to expect? I was there too. When a friend first suggested I try Reiki for my health struggles, I had no idea this gentle practice would transform my life and eventually become my calling.
My First Reiki Experience. written by Carol Mack - Ruck
I was first introduced to Reiki by a friend who noticed I was struggling with my health and overall wellbeing. She suggested I try it, and although I didn’t know what to expect, I trusted her and booked my first session with a Usui Reiki Practitioner. Stepping into that space, I felt a mix of curiosity and scepticism. But as the session unfolded, I noticed subtle shifts in my energy and a deep sense of nourishment for both my body and mind. It was gentle, yet profound—a reminder that healing often comes in unexpected ways.
What is Usui Reiki?
For those who may not know, Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. The word “Reiki” means “universal life force energy”—the loving energy that flows through all living things. When this energy flows freely, we feel balanced, calm, and connected. When it becomes blocked, we may feel tired, stressed, or emotionally heavy. Reiki works by gently clearing those blocks, supporting healing on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.
What to Expect in a Reiki Session
If you’re considering trying Reiki, here’s what a typical session might look like:
• You’ll lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table in a calm, peaceful environment
• The practitioner places their hands gently on or just above your body at various points
• You might feel warmth, tingling, or simply deep relaxation during the session
• Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes and leave you feeling refreshed and restored
• There’s no pressure or expectation—just space for your body to receive what it needs
From Client to Student: My Path to Practice
That first experience sparked a curiosity in me about the energy flowing through us, the connection between body, mind, and spirit, and how Reiki could support not just my own wellbeing, but the wellbeing of others.
Over time, I continued receiving sessions, each one deepening my understanding and appreciation for this practice. What began as a personal journey soon became a calling, guiding me towards learning, practising, and ultimately becoming a Usui Reiki Master Teacher.
Who Can Benefit from Reiki?
Reiki is gentle and non-invasive, making it suitable for almost everyone. People often turn to Reiki for support with:
• Stress and anxiety — finding calm in the midst of life’s pressures
• Physical discomfort — supporting the body’s natural healing processes
• Emotional challenges — processing grief, trauma, or difficult transitions
• Sleep difficulties — restoring balance and promoting rest
• Personal growth — deepening self-awareness and spiritual connection
• Complementary support — working alongside medical treatment for holistic wellbeing
Sharing Reiki with Others
Now, I’m grateful to share Reiki with others—helping them reconnect with their energy, find balance, and experience the same gentle, transformative healing that first inspired me.
Whether you’re dealing with stress, seeking emotional support, looking for complementary therapy alongside medical treatment, or simply curious about energy healing, Reiki offers a safe, nurturing space for your wellbeing journey.
